Hajj Guide

A complete, step-by-step companion for Australian pilgrims — the pillars, the rites of each day, the essential duas, and everything to pack before you leave home.

The foundation

What is Hajj?

Non-negotiable

The 4 pillars of Hajj

Ihram

The sacred state entered at the Meeqat

Wuquf at Arafah

Standing at Arafah on 9 Dhul-Hijjah

Tawaf al-Ifadha

The main Tawaf of Hajj

Sa'ee

Safa to Marwah, seven times

Pillars must be completed — they cannot be compensated for.

The 7 obligatory acts (wajibat)

  • Entering Ihram from the Meeqat
  • Standing at Arafat until after sunset
  • Spending the night in Muzdalifah
  • Spending the nights in Mina
  • Stoning the Jamarat
  • Shaving or trimming the hair
  • The farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada’)

Missing a wajib act requires a damm (sacrifice).

Types of Hajj & Meeqat

TypeDescriptionSacrifice
IfraadHajj onlyNot required
QiranUmrah and Hajj combinedRequired
TamattuUmrah first, then HajjRequired

Tamattu is the most common choice for pilgrims travelling from afar — it allows you to leave Ihram between Umrah and Hajj.

MeeqatFor people of
Dhul HulaifaAl-Madinah
Al-JuhfaSham (Syria / Egypt)
Qarn al-ManazilNajd / GCC countries
YalamlamYemen / South Asia — and flights routed over it
Jeddah is not a Meeqat. You must enter Ihram on the aircraft before crossing the boundary — most airlines announce it 30 minutes and again 5 minutes beforehand.

Before you fly

How to enter Ihram

  1. 1

    Perform ghusl at home

A full body wash — for both men and women.

  2. 2

Trim nails and remove unwanted hair at home

Do this before Ihram; it is not permitted afterwards.

  3. 3

Apply perfume to the body (men)

Apply before entering Ihram, not to the Ihram cloth.

  4. 4

    Wear the Ihram garments

Men: two unstitched white sheets, izar and rida, and no head covering. Women: ordinary modest clothing with the face and hands uncovered.

  5. 5

Pray two rak'at if it is a permitted time

Then make the intention as your flight approaches the Meeqat.

  6. 6

Make the intention and begin the Talbiyah

State the intention for Umrah or Hajj and recite the Talbiyah aloud (men) or quietly (women).

Prohibitions while in Ihram

  • Cutting hair or nails
  • Applying perfume
  • Marriage contracts and intimacy
  • Hunting or assisting a hunt
  • Arguing, quarrelling and obscene speech
  • Men: stitched clothing and covering the head
  • Women: covering the face with a niqab or wearing gloves

  • After sunrise travel to Arafat — do not leave early
  • After Zawaal listen to the Khutbah quietly
  • Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened (2 + 2) at Dhuhr time
  • Supplicate continuously until sunset — this is what you came for
  • After sunset proceed calmly to Muzdalifah
  • At Muzdalifah pray Maghrib and Isha combined, and sleep under the sky
  • Collect 7–49 pea-sized pebbles for the stoning

  • Travel to Mina reciting the Talbiyah

Say it with meaning

Essential duas

Talbiyah — recite from Ihram until stoning Jamarat al-Aqabah

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise, favour and sovereignty are Yours. You have no partner.

Men raise their voices; women recite quietly.

Between the Yamani Corner and the Black Stone (each Tawaf circuit)

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire. (Al-Baqarah 2:201)

At Safa — beginning of Sa'ee

Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah

Indeed Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.

Then face the Ka'bah, say Allahu Akbar three times and recite: La ilaha illAllahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.

Between the laps of Sa'ee

Rabbi-ghfir warham, innaka antal-a'azzul-akram

My Lord, forgive and have mercy. Indeed You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous. (Ibn Abi Shayba)

The best du'a on the Day of Arafat

There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise, and He is able to do all things. (Tirmidhi)

Spend from Zawaal until sunset in continuous du'a, dhikr and Qur'an, facing the Qiblah.

Before drinking Zamzam

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan wasi'an wa shifa'an min kulli da'

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, vast provision and cure from every illness.

Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for — make a specific du'a.

With each pebble at the Jamarat

Allahu Akbar

Allah is the Greatest — said with each of the 7 pebbles at each Jamarah. (Bukhari & Muslim)

After the 1st and 2nd Jamarah, face the Qiblah and make a long du'a. Not after the 3rd (Aqabah).
